Chapter G News – September 2010

Chapter Director’s Column

By Jonelle & Bob Keene

This year is just going so fast. It is now September and it just seemed like summer had just started.

Hope some are able to attend the Region E Rally in Iowa over the Labor Day weekend.

Chapter G will again be hosting our Chilly Chili ride on Saturday September 18th. We are going to change it up this year and have our 2 and 1 hour rides leaving directly from the Carver Lake Park in Woodbury. Our 2 hour ride leaders are going to be Pete and Laura Winters. We will have coffee, orange juice and donuts at the park before you leave on your ride. Come meet at the park for the first ride starting around 10:00 a.m. The first ride will leave around 10:30 a.m. We will start serving the chili and hot dogs at approximately 12:30 p.m.

See attached word flyer for more details.

Hope to see you soon and ride safe.

Just Plain Buggy.

Another item that mother nature throws at us is bugs. Most of the time they just go splat on the windshield or other parts of the bike or on you. The least that can happen is a mess to clean off, the worst could be loss of control. If you can’t see through the windshield you can’t see where you’re going! A few years ago we rode through a butterfly migration. The windshield was yellow, the bike was yellow, the helmets where yellow, my pants were yellow. I had to clean the windshield off at every stop. There were bits O’ bug everywhere and I was pulling them out of the fairing, wiring, etc, for the rest of the summer. Yuck.

Some bugs have hard shells, which can shatter and leave sharp bits all over. Bug guts can also be corrosive. One bad place for this is your fork travel areas. These bits can get caught in the fork seals and then you’ve got a leak and a hefty repair bill. Chrome and other bright work can tarnish quickly also. So use fork protectors and clean the remains off before they harden into bug cement.

When bugs hit your arms, legs, neck or face it can be quite a surprise! June bugs at 60+ MPH can leave quite a bruise! I had a wasp or hornet impact on the corner of my glasses and explode all over right eye. Talk about watering…. I had to pull over and wipe the mess off. Anyone allergic to Hornets, wasps, etc should carry an antidote with them just in case. I’ll bet your helmet takes a beating too, so check and clean it periodically.

So watch out for bugs, especially migrations of butterflies, may flies, grasshoppers, June bugs, etc. Regular flies by road kill can make a mess too. Also be aware that birds often chase and eat the bugs. Remember to wash the remains off at your first opportunity. Take precautions against further damage to the bike or to yourself by using protective equipment.

 Take care, ride safe.
