Chapter Q News – September 2010

Chapter Director’s Chatter

By: Lee & Patti Kessler

Despite Summer coming to a rapid end, there are still several riding days left.  Chapter Q and our neighboring Chapters still have several events left to participate in also.  At our September social, we will hear from Connie in a presentation on trailering.  We’re looking forward to this interesting information as we’ve not had this type of training in a very long time.  Be sure to keep an eye out for information on Chapter G’s Chilly Chili fund raiser on September 18.  It’s always a good time.

Don’t forget – there is still plenty of warm weather for riding – be sure to keep hydrated and watch out for those inattentive drivers.

 Safe riding,

There is a lot of road work going on this summer thanks to the stimulus and recovery act. Some of the construction areas are very congested and have a lot of workers and machines working near the traffic lanes.  This usually happens in town and on secondary roads instead of the main highways where the construction area is more protected. I have noticed that it is harder to concentrate on the road ahead when there are people and machines close to the road. I find myself paying so much attention to workers that may step out into the road or a machine that may move into the road in front of me that I don’t see the small things in the road like rocks or ruts or other construction debris until I am very close to them. I have to make a conscience effort to keep scanning ahead for all hazards. It is best to go through these unprotected areas a little slower on a bike and be cautious. There is also a lot of repainting the cross walks and other traffic control arrows on the pavement and these are slippery and even worse when it is raining. It’s nice to have good roads but it is a pain when they are fixing them. Be careful going through these areas.
